Ann Miller Kontz

Killing a husband, losing a lover

Ann Brier, later Ann Miller Kontz, was born in Batavia, New York, but she was raised in comfort in the Pennsylvania town of Spring Grove. She met Eric Miller at Purdue University when she was 18 years old. They were immediately drawn to each other, partly because they were both highly intelligent, dedicated chemistry students. But romance did not prevent them from working hard at their studies. In 1992, they both graduated with master’s degrees in biochemistry. With their degrees finally under their belts they got married in that same year.

Still ambitious, they continued their studies at North Carolina State University. This time they were both enrolled on PhD courses. In 1998, Eric obtained his PhD, but instead of taking one of the high-paying jobs offered by the pharmaceutical industry he obtained a federal grant to do research into paediatric AIDS. Although Ann was perfectly capable of emulating Eric’s success, her studies were interrupted in January 2000, when she gave birth to Clare. Motherhood and a PhD course did not mix, so she abandoned that particular route. Instead, she used her master’s degree to obtain a well-paid position as a research scientist with GlaxoSmithKline, one of the top pharmaceutical companies in the country.

Eric and Ann had shared many ideals as students, but they began to drift apart. Ann now spent a good portion of her income on beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery, while Eric focused his attention on his research. Not only that – Ann also began spending more and more time with her colleagues. On 15 November 2000, she encouraged Eric to meet up with her new male friends for a ‘guys’ night out’. They all went off to a local bowling alley, where they shared hot dogs and beer before the game. Eric thought the food was fine, but he said the beer tasted strange. One of Ann’s colleagues put it down to the fact that beer was never any good in bowling alleys. As it turned out, Eric did not finish his drink because he accidentally spilled it. It was a clumsy move that might very well have bought him a few more weeks of life.

After the group had played a few frames, Eric experienced severe stomach pains. Food poisoning, everyone thought. But as the evening progressed, Eric’s condition deteriorated dramatically. Before midnight, Ann drove her husband to the Rex Hospital. The stricken man was given myriad tests, but nothing could shed any light on the nature of his condition. With Ann by his side, Eric stayed at the hospital until 24 November, by which time his condition seemed to have improved. When he was released, he went back home to Ann and their daughter.

Hallucinations

However, six days later Eric doubled up in pain shortly after eating dinner. Ann then drove him back to the hospital, where he began hallucinating. He was thrashing about so much that he had to be placed in restraints. By chance, he was in this state when the results of his earlier tests came in.
